~New technology for realizing “environmental conservation” and “enriching life”~
President Matsuguchi Tadashi
Crossing the waves of change
We are facing global social challenges such as climate change, population issues, economic disparities, and food issues. We are at the mercy of major changes that are difficult to predict, including not only the rise of new lifestyles due to the spread of COVID, but also Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the realization of geopolitical risks to our country in the new Cold War between the United States and China.
Moreover, advancements in digital technologies like AI and blockchain, known as "digital transformation (DX)," are revolutionizing the way people live and reshaping industries and society at their core.
We, the OSP Group, have overcome many great waves in the past. By adhering to our basic philosophy of putting the customer first, which has remained unchanged since our founding, we aim to achieve harmony between the company's prosperity and the happiness of our employees. We have continued striving for high-added value, more reliable services than anywhere else, and unbeatable development capabilities.
With your unwavering support, the OSP Group has flourished into a leading global corporate conglomerate specializing in packaging. Today, we proudly stand with nine domestic and six overseas companies and a workforce totaling 4,700 dedicated employees. I would like to once again express my gratitude to all of our customers, business partners, and local communities who have supported us up to this point, and to all of our employees who have taken this journey with us.
Searching for and deepening our knowledge
OSP Group's history is one of change. We have consistently evolved and embraced change, driven by our steadfast commitment as a processing company. To achieve transformation, it's vital to cultivate an environment that fosters "knowledge exploration" to broaden our general understanding and "knowledge deepening" to delve into these insights further. To commemorate the 95th anniversary of our company's founding, we've launched the Innovation Center—an R&D hub driven by open innovation through collaboration with industry, government, and academia. This initiative aims to create future packaging solutions swiftly, seize new business opportunities, and streamline our R&D divisions.
Additionally, within the center, we have opened O-SPIRAL, a knowledge communication space where you can share information about the OSP Group, talk with colleagues who share your dreams, and stimulate your intellectual curiosity. We will continue to create new trends in society and the packaging industry, which are becoming increasingly diverse, without limiting our ideas. We hope that our stakeholders will use O-SPIRAL as a place to foster people and technology, and as a base for regional revitalization.
As globalization continues to shape our world, both socially and economically, relationships are becoming more and more complex on a global scale. In a world of rapid and unpredictable change, the era of predictable harmony, where things moved according to predictions, has drawn to a close.
What is needed for change is not prediction, but decision-making based on reliable information gathering and multifaceted preparations that can respond to any situation and that do not miss any signs of change. The OSP Group will continue to transform itself by always challenging preconceptions, breaking down fixed ideas, and being astutely observant so that we may provide products and services in a timely manner that enrich lifestyles and meet the present needs of society.
OSP Growth Plan 2022
In 2027, we will celebrate our 100th anniversary. We have formulated the medium-term management plan "OSP Growth Plan 2022" as a growth strategy for the "OSP Group's 100-year plan."
There are four main points: "Neo Package," "New Market," "Novel Method," and "for SDGs."
“Neo Package”
This promotes "Green Package" and "PX (Package Transformation)" initiatives to minimize environmental impact and foster sustainable lifestyles.
First, the "Green Package" initiative minimizes environmental impact and makes tangible contributions to resource conservation, reducing food loss and advancing towards a decarbonized society.
"(PX) Package Transformation" is a term I've coined. Essentially, it involves harnessing the power of DX, IT, and robotics within packaging operations to enhance processes and even revolutionize the packaging itself. By introducing innovative hardware and materials, we unlock its full potential.
Through these efforts, we aim to achieve the "Neo Package," a transformative concept that will revolutionize products, services, and business models to promote the creation of enriched lifestyles.
"New Market"
We will enter the industrial and logistics fields by developing packaging materials that meet ethical values. And we will also increase the ratio of overseas sales by building the OSP Pan-Pacific Supply Network.
We will develop packaging materials that add new value to industrial packaging and logistics packaging, such as convenience, functional beauty, and reduced environmental impact, and that meet the ethical values of consumers, thereby revolutionizing the way they are transported and delivered.
OSP AUSTRALIA PTY LTD, which had been dormant due to the coronavirus pandemic, resumed operations in May 2022. In the near future, we will expand into new markets in the Pacific Rim region, with Japan as our hub, by leveraging the manufacturing we have cultivated in Japan, in addition to expanding to the West Coast of the United States.
"Novel Method"
We aim to improve productivity by promoting work style reform by utilizing DX and AI. We’re also introducing a flat-rate subscription service to labelers and packaging machines to eliminate labor shortages for our customers.
For our 90th anniversary we announced the "Industry 4.0, OSP Edition" and currently have dozens of digital printing presses running unmanned at night at our Fukuoka, Osaka, and Tochigi factories. We will continue striving to innovate how we work and improve productivity through autonomous smart factories, independent of human input, time constraints, or geographical limitations. In addition, we have developed a print salon dedicated to digital printing, “Digital Print Base,” and by connecting with customers in remote areas, we are responding to the growing desire for short delivery times.
Development of AI design is also underway with a goal of 50% of the design completed. We aim to create a division of labor between AI and humans in design creation, with AI creating designs that are safe and easy to recognize, and people creating designs that are stimulating and emotionally resonant. We have also created the OSP Digital Color Guide to digitize color chips. Smartphone camera input provides rapid and accurate color evaluations. In addition, by introducing flat-rate subscriptions for labelers and packaging machines, we lower the hurdles for capital investment and help customers improve efficiency and labor savings at their production sites.
“for SDGs”
We are committed to minimizing the environmental footprint of our entire business and implement material recycling initiatives for release paper. We’re also working closely with individual family environments to realize work-life integration for employees.
Plans to establish a system for recycling release paper, aim for a circular economy, and transform the sticker and label business into something more sustainable are underway. Our company has quite a few work style reforms that accommodate diversifying lifestyles and individual home environments, such as childcare support, non-relocation transfers, and satellite offices. We advocate for work-life integration, fostering a flexible and elevated approach that seamlessly blends professional and personal spheres to enhance synergy and elevate overall quality of life, leading to greater fulfillment and happiness.
Equal opportunity, embracing individual diversity
The OSP Group aims to create a society where you don’t need courage to survive and a company where you don’t need to be too bold to make a living. We believe that employees thrive not solely on courage, but on a process that nurtures their curiosity, guiding them towards success. Our goal is to cultivate a workplace where opportunities for growth and evaluation are equal for all employees, and where individuals are treated fairly, recognizing the inherent aspects of their personality. The OSP Group remains committed to the ongoing endeavor of environmental preservation and enhancing the quality of life for the betterment of society, our planet's beauty, and the well-being of future generations.
