Solving the problem of lifting and peeling: Launch of new "curved surface labels" specially designed to attach securely to cylindrical containers with small diameters

OSAKA SEALING PRINTING CO., LTD. (Headquarters: Tennoji-ku, Osaka City; President: Matsuguchi Tadashi), a member of the OSP Group, is pleased to announce that it has established a production system in July 2023 and has begun selling "curved surface labels."

This product is a curved surface label that can be firmly attached to cylindrical containers with small diameters such as test tubes and Spitz tubes. It uses an adhesive that has enough adhesive power to adhere cleanly to polyolefin, which is considered difficult to stick to, and has high retention power to keep the label attached. While the strong adhesive allows for a firm attachment, the low tack strength allows the label to be easily removed immediately after application. The labels are available in three types of materials: synthetic thermal paper, cast coated paper, and thermal paper.

■ Development Background

Labels for cylindrical containers such as test tubes and Spitz tubes used in medical settings often use general-purpose strong adhesive label base paper. However, when a straight label is applied to a curved surface, the repulsive force that tries to return the label to its original shape acts on the label, which can cause the label to lift or peel off. The curved repulsive force is even more likely to cause problems with stiff, stiff surface paper. Sometimes, measures such as applying tape over the label are taken, so we began developing a dedicated label to solve these issues. The product was commercialized using Osaka Sealing Printing's coating technology, which combines the base paper and adhesive. It can be used safely on a wide range of adherends, including materials and container diameters.

■ Evaluation of adhesion promotion

Accelerated testing involved attaching the labels to Spitz tubes made of different materials such as polypropylene and polystyrene and leaving them at 70°C for a week, and as a result, there was no lifting or peeling of the label base paper. In addition, there was no lifting due to outgassing from the plastic, so the labels can be used on a variety of substrates.
