  • press release

We are pleased to announce that 12 sake products (6 sake products x 2 series of cosmetic boxes) using new packaging materials proposed by OSAKA SEALING PRINTING CO., LTD. (Head office: Tennoji-ku, Osaka; President: Matsuguchi Tadashi), an OSP group company, have been launched this fall by Nara Kasugayama Sake Brewery (Address: Nara City, Nara Prefecture; Representative: Yorihiro Shimada).

We have been able to solve our customers' problems and increase the value of their products by designing and printing the labels and packaging that can be considered the face of the product. Utilizing this know-how, we devised and developed a new package aimed at acquiring new customers for alcohol and expanding sales channels. At the same time, we had a connection with Nara Kasugayama Sake Brewery, which was considering strengthening sales overseas and enhancing souvenirs, and we came up with a joint project. We will continue to propose new packages to other sake breweries and manufacturers so that they can expand their sales channels.

■ Ordinary consumers: The joy of choosing and drinking

Generally, sake is sold in 1.8L or 720ml bottles, which some light users say are too large. In addition to the size, the bottles are heavy and there is a risk of them breaking, so people tend to hesitate to buy them as souvenirs. Therefore, we developed a new package that allows you to enjoy sake more easily. It is a flat bag that you can easily open by hand and pour the sake directly into, and it is a small volume (100ml) that is easy to try. It comes in a disc-shaped presentation box that is light and unbreakable, making it easy to carry and recommended as a souvenir or small gift. There are also two mechanisms on the back of the presentation box. There is a small window that allows you to see the color of the sake, and a cut that becomes the legs of a photo frame so that you can enjoy the presentation box as a decoration.

■ Sake breweries and manufacturers: Creating new sales areas and expanding sales channels

The easy-to-try size and ingenious packaging make it easy to pick up, leading to opportunities to acquire light users. In addition, the highly designed presentation box allows it to be sold as a souvenir or gift, and it can also be used as a local product as a return gift for hometown tax donations, expanding sales channels. As mentioned above, the presentation box is thin (9 mm thick), so it can be displayed in two ways to suit the space available in souvenir shops and retail stores with limited sales floor space. When placed horizontally, the patterns and photos stand out on the sales floor, increasing visibility. It can also be arranged upright like books to suit the sales floor space.

■Osaka Sealing Printing's Vision

There are approximately 1,350 sake makers in Japan (source: National Tax Agency "Trends in the Number of Sake Makers"), and Osaka Sealing Printing has a track record of doing business with approximately 350 of these companies. We have a track record of solving customer problems and improving the value of their products through the design and printing of numerous labels and packages. Inheriting our customer's desire to "deliver the greatness of sake to many people," we developed a new package to contribute to expanding sales channels. We will be proposing this to sake breweries and other manufacturers in the future.

Nara Kasugayama Sake Brewery's Initiatives

■ The popularity of Japanese sake overseas

In 2013, Japanese cuisine was designated as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO, and interest in Japanese food has increased overseas, while Japanese sake, also known as "SAKE," is also attracting attention. The export value has been on a growth trend for over 10 years, reaching 14,011 million yen in 2015 and peaking at 47,489 million yen in 2022. Although it is expected to decrease slightly in 2023, it will reach 41,082 million yen, which is about three times the amount from eight years ago (source: Trade Statistics of the Ministry of Finance). In addition, due to the advancement of refrigeration technology, Nara Kasugayama Sake Brewery sees future business opportunities and plans to strengthen sales overseas.

■Souvenirs from the ancient capital of Nara Prefecture

The ancient capital of Nara Prefecture is home to many historical buildings and Buddhist statues, attracting many tourists throughout the year. The water and sake rice used to make sake are influenced by the climate and geography of each region, so there are regional characteristics to each region. Nara Prefecture sake is rich and sweet, and is popular not only for home consumption but also as a souvenir for tourists.

■ Enjoy buying in packaging, with 12 different gift boxes

There are two series of packaging designs. One is a design featuring pictures from the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu poems housed at the Saga Arashiyama Bunkakan Museum, and from the 100 poems, six poems with a connection to Nara Prefecture, such as waka poems set in the area, were chosen. The other is a design modeled after Roku, a Japanese deer beloved for many years in Nara Park. Six items were selected from photographs taken by a photographer who followed Roku for nine years. The design has been enhanced so that the package can be enjoyed when choosing a sake.

  • Located at the foot of the World Heritage Site "Kasugayama Primeval Forest", it is said that the water flows from this primeval forest, which has been protected since ancient times as the sacred mountain of Kasuga Taisha Shrine. The sake made here gained popularity during the Muromachi period as "Nanto Morohaku (Nara sake made with white rice)". By harmonizing innovation with the traditions and techniques of Nara sake, the sake brewing history that Nara is proud of continues to this day.
