■ Mt. Ibuki Vegetation Restoration Project

Mt. Ibuki, which straddles Maibara City, Shiga Prefecture and Gifu Prefecture, is the highest peak in Shiga Prefecture at 1,377 meters above sea level and has been selected as one of the 100 most famous mountains in Japan. The summit is a popular tourist spot in the prefecture as a treasure trove of diverse plants, with flowers designated as national natural monuments in full bloom and rare plants, including endemic species, growing there. However, in recent years, the environment has become more favorable for Japanese deer to live in due to global warming and reduced snowfall. On the other hand, the number of hunters has decreased, and the number of deer has increased dramatically. As a result, valuable plants have been eaten and trampled, leading to devastation, denuding the slopes, and creating a critical situation with soil erosion and slope collapse. In order to restore Mt. Ibuki to its former natural abundance, this project is working to strengthen the capture of Japanese deer, prevent slope collapses, restore vegetation, and conserve vegetation on the summit area.
